TYPE 40 Main
Product overview
Compact in form. Monumental in capability.
The TYPE 40 Main was developed for studios that need more output, low-frequency reach, and listening distance than nearfield monitors can provide, but are not well served by the size and complexity of a traditional large-format main system. It is a compact, full-range reference main monitor with the control, resolution, and headroom required for critical listening.
Its sealed three-way design brings full-range monitoring into a single cabinet. Controlled extension down to 20 Hz allows low-frequency decisions to be made directly, while the D’Appolito MTM arrangement provides precise imaging and controlled dispersion across the listening area. In ZERO PHASE mode, HEDD Lineariser® provides phase-accurate monitoring for critical work, while HEDD CTRL brings system control and manual response tuning to the listening position.
The TYPE 40 Main is complete on its own, with no separate subwoofer required. It can also serve as the foundation of a larger TYPE 40 System as room and production requirements grow.
Key features
Full-range bass from a sealed cabinet
A 10¾-inch high-excursion woofer extends response down to 20 Hz from a fully sealed enclosure. The result is controlled low-frequency behaviour and clear pitch definition, allowing kick drums, bass instruments, and sub-bass content to be judged directly without requiring a separate subwoofer.
HEDD Air Motion Transformer
Hand-built in Berlin, the HEDD Air Motion Transformer uses a thinner diaphragm and optimised fold geometry for lower effective moving mass. It responds quickly to changes in the signal, reproducing transients, spatial cues, and fine detail with precision while extending response to 40 kHz.
Controlled D’Appolito MTM design
Two 4-inch midrange drivers flank the AMT in a symmetrical D’Appolito MTM arrangement. This creates a focused acoustic centre, maintains an even horizontal listening window, and controls vertical dispersion to reduce reflections from the floor and ceiling.
HEDD Lineariser®
In ZERO PHASE mode, HEDD Lineariser® corrects amplitude and phase response and time-aligns the drivers for precise transient reproduction and stereo imaging. FLAT mode corrects frequency response without phase linearisation, while OFF provides the lowest possible latency for tracking and real-time performance.
HEDD CTRL
HEDD CTRL brings transparent control of the TYPE 40 Main to the listening position, giving engineers the tools to manually correct the room. Its 12-band parametric EQ allows precise tuning of the monitor response, while level, input, filters, and Lineariser modes can be adjusted without leaving the sweet spot. Presets can be saved for different workflows, formats, or listening positions, with every adjustment remaining visible and under the engineer’s control. The free software can manage anything from a stereo pair to an immersive system of up to 250 speakers.
Complete now. Expandable later.
The TYPE 40 Main is a complete full-range monitor on its own. When room size, listening distance, or production demands increase, one to three TYPE 40 XTD modules can be added per channel for more output, low-frequency headroom, and directional control without replacing the Main.
